1234 Great Highway
Long, thin and dense. This concept for TLCD & Self-Help for the Elderly is nearly 600’ in length.
Perched at the edge of the City, where land meets the unforgiving sea, our proposal embodies the resilience of the natural world. The building, with its undulating forms inspired by the majestic curves of a whale, rises from its site like a sentinel, shielding its surroundings.
The “head” of the building faces Golden Gate Park and contains the main entry lobby, community services and gathering spaces, and at the uppermost level is a computer / technology lab with commanding 270 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the full length of Golden Gate Park and a majority of the Sunset Neighborhood. Further South, the “body” of the building tapers gently and provides several sheltered green space areas. The “tail” section and Southern most portion of the building is sleek and dynamic with walk up units firmly anchoring the building to the site.
The building not only serves as a sanctuary for those within but also respects and responds to the ever-changing landscape that surrounds it.
